4th Grade "Happy Flowers" Catchall Trays
Inspired by the Japanese pop artist Takashi Murakami, students' pictures were used to create colorful "happy flowers." Each flower was hand-cut by hardworking 4th grade moms. The students used the flowers to design a vibrant and cheerful collage of their adorable flower faces. Finally, the collages were transformed into darling - and functional - porcelain catchall trays to hold keys, loose change or anything you can't seem to find a place for.

5th Grade Chuck Close-Inspired Portraits
Fifth Graders created abstract self-portraits in a photorealist style inspired by American artist Chuck Close. Using pencils, sharpies and drawing paper, kids first traced their photograph. A grid containing abstract and geometric shapes was then drawn on top of each photorealistic portrait. With careful attention to tone and color, kids completed their work of art. Students were captivated not only by Chuck Close’s art but his resilience and ability to overcome adversity after suffering many physical, emotional and learning challenges throughout his life. Ironically, Close suffers from a neurological condition, “prosopagnosia” or face blindness, which prohibits his ability to recognize faces. One time he was unable to even recognize a woman he had lived with for a year. It is this condition that propelled his interest in large scale portraits.
